What is Living Mindfully and why does it matter so much?
Embracing the Present Moment
In our fast paced and constantly changing world, many of us find ourselves caught up in the whirlwind of daily life. We juggle multiple responsibilities, chase after success and strive to meet the demands of an ever growing to-do list. In the midst of this chaos, we often lose touch with the present moment and forget who we are and to truly live. Living mindfully offers us a powerful pathway to break free from that autopilot mode and embrace the richness of each moment. After all, we only live once and it really does fly by.
Being Present in the Here and Now
Living mindfully means consciously choosing to be aware of our thoughts, emotions, sensations, and experiences in the present moment. It involves an intentional shift from living on autopilot to being fully present in our lives. Instead of mindlessly going through the motions, living mindfully (with full awareness) invites us to engage with each moment with clarity, curiosity, and non-judgment.
When we live mindfully, we become observers of our own lives. We notice the thoughts that arise, the sensations in our bodies, and the emotions that come and go. By cultivating this awareness we gain insights into our patterns of behaviour, habits, and reactions. It’s about being present to our lives, rather than being dragged along by them. Which often results in us feeling anxious, stressed or depressed - or a mixture of everything.
Making Mindfulness Automatic
Embedding mindfulness into our daily lives brings about a myriad of benefits. When we practice mindfulness consistently, it becomes a natural and automatic part of our being. We begin to experience a deeper connection with ourselves, others, and the world around us. These are my top 5 ways that living mindfully benefits us:
1. Being Present and Engaged
By using mindfulness techniques, tools, and mindsets we develop the ability to be fully present in each moment. We are no longer distracted by past regrets or future worries, but rather engaged in the richness of the present. This heightened presence allows us to connect deeply with our experiences, relationships, and surroundings, using all of our senses to experience life!
2. Emotional Regulation
Mindfulness empowers us to observe our emotions without being overwhelmed by them. By cultivating non-judgmental awareness, we gain the ability to respond to our emotions in a skilful and compassionate manner. This leads to greater emotional resilience and a reduction in stress, anxiety, and reactivity. When we talk about regulating emotions we mean that instead of flying off the handle or feeling completely overwhelmed by an emotion we are able to sit with it until it passes (everything does) instead of it taking over and ruining our day or conversation.
3. Improved Focus and Clarity
Mindful living enhances our ability to concentrate and sustain our attention. It is the ultimate mind training. As we learn how to be more present we become less prone to distractions and mental chatter. This improved focus and clarity enables us to make better decisions, solve problems more effectively, and excel in our tasks and endeavours. We can actually do more in less time. This sounds counter intuitive, until you try it and feel it for yourself. Many of my clients say they experience this and it really does work.
4. Stress Management
The practice of mindfulness has been scientifically proven to have a significant impact on reducing stress levels. For example the MBSR course that Jon Kabat-Zinn created is evidence based and has been taught for over 40 years with hundreds of thousands of people benefiting from it’s science backed practices.
By using these tools, we can shift our attention to the present moment and let go of worries about the future or regrets about the past. We can approach challenges with a calm and centred mindset, leading to a greater sense of well-being. Meaning we don’t feel so triggered and frustrated by life, we can cope a lot better with anything that is thrown at us.
5. Better Relationships
This might be my favourite reason for living mindfully. Becoming more attuned to the needs, feelings, and experiences of others. Listening with genuine presence and empathy, fostering deeper connections and understanding. Having this approach gives us the ability to cultivate patience, kindness, and compassion, which positively impacts our interactions with loved ones, colleagues, and strangers alike. Being 100% present with another person is the greatest gift you can give them.
Reclaiming Our Authenticity
The benefits of living this way extend beyond the surface level. They touch the very essence of who we are and how we experience life. Without mindfulness, we can find ourselves being carried away by our thoughts, emotions, and automatic behaviours. We may feel disconnected from our true desires, values, and purpose. Basically, we can feel like we don’t have a clue what’s going on and that we have no control over our life.
Using mindfulness helps us to reclaim our authenticity and take charge of our lives. By being fully present, we can align our actions with our intentions and values. We become active participants in shaping our own narratives and creating a life that is true to ourselves. We start living truly authentically.
Cultivating Inner Peace and Connection
How much time do you spend thinking about your inner world? How often do you reflect on how you’re doing? When do you consider what’s important to you, what you want more of or less of? It’s difficult to make time for this kind of self reflection because we’re all so busy all the time, but if we’re not doing this, life just hurtles by without us and it’s ten years from now and you’re left wondering “what am I doing?”
If you want that feeling of inner peace, grounding, and resilience, get asking! Write yourself questions, spend time considering them. Go for a walk, meditate, run, have a bath, swim, take the dog out - but be thinking about what you want from life. We have this one short time on earth, are you using this time wisely?
Inner Peace: Regardless of what’s going on externally, we can learn to detach from the constant fluctuations of thoughts and emotions, finding a calm centre amidst the storms of life. This inner peace becomes a reliable anchor that sustains us through the ups and downs of our day. Imagine feeling connected with that place deep inside you that knows it’s going to be ok? It makes ‘stress’ a whole different experience.
Life is Now: Fully engage with the present moment, savour the beauty and richness of life. Tuning in to the sensations in our bodies, the sounds around us, and the sights that unfold is a beautiful thing. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with the news and global catastrophes, but we can’t help anyone if we’re in a mess ourselves. We need strength and love and appreciation so we can show up for those who need our support and kindness.
Your Body: By becoming more aware of the physical sensations, movements, and needs of our body means we can take better care of ourselves. Catching that mild pain or discomfort early before it escalates. Or sensing that you’re not actually hungry at all, just thirsty so you’ll wait a while before eating again. Or feeling into what your body needs, maybe it wants to move, to stretch, maybe you decide you want to get a standing desk?
Intuition: How often do you hear your intuition? And what about acting on it? Sometimes we can hear it and ignore it. Mindfulness teaches us the tools to listen and act with more ease and trust for our selves. When we tune into this internal guidance, we gain clarity, insights, and a deeper knowing. This intuitive connection empowers us to make choices that align with our authentic selves.
The Ripple Effect. Inspiring Positive Change in Others
As we embark on this journey, the effects ripple outwards, positively impacting those around us. Our transformation influences the people we interact with and creates a ripple effect of compassion.
Being totally present with someone is a beautiful gift where both parties benefit. Active listening becomes automatic and when we truly hear and understand other people it creates an environment of trust, respect, and open communication. A deeper connection. And as the elderly and wise say, this is really the most important thing in life.
We are naturally kind and compassionate but the daily slog of life can sometimes knock this out of us. It’s with regular practice that we can rediscover this ability within us and more easily access it. With this we become more patient, understanding, and empathetic towards others.
So many of us can feel uncomfortable in our own skin. Comparing ourselves to other people, having high expectations of ourselves or wising for a different life or future all contribute to us not feeling ‘ourselves’. Embedding mindsets into our life helps us to more easily express our thoughts, feelings, and values without fear of judgment. To simply be.
If not now, when?
Mindful living is a transformative practice that requires a genuine desire for change, self-love, and a commitment to continuous growth. By embracing mindfulness we reclaim the present moment, cultivate inner peace, and connect with our true selves. Moreover, we inspire positive change in others, creating a ripple effect of mindfulness and compassion that extends far beyond our immediate circle.
